Friesen's Family Bakery and Bistro
Though one of Mankato’s newer businesses, Friesen’s Family Bakery has worked to make a difference in the local community from day one. For this reason, South Central Minnesota Pride is pleased to dedicate Pridefest 2015 to Friesen’s Family Bakery.
It is not often that a new business opens and right away they are showing their support for LGBT people. With the bakery opening in May of 2014, the owners, Tony Friesen, Natasha Frost, and Spencer Vanderhoof have not been quiet about their support of the LGBTcommunity. One of Friensen’s core principles is supporting Mankato’s community and Tony says that their work with Pride is part of that. Tony goes on to say that SCMN Pride has been the first and only organization that they’ve donated full rainbow decorated cakes to, and that last year’s Pridefest was the first time they did off-site vending. They chose Pridefest because they wanted to show the community that they are a company that stands up for their morals.
When visiting Friesen’s, the environment is immediately friendly and welcoming. Their rainbow shirts are visible and their service shows no judgment. Friesen’s employees are oftenseen working in the bakery in rainbow tie-dyed shirts supporting Pride. Whether going in for soup and a sandwich, or for the lovely bakery treats, you know that it is a safe space to visit and gather. In fact, should one voice dissent in the visible display of morals, Tony will calmly and politely educate and inform how all people are important to the Mankato community.
As someone who recently needed bakery services for my same-sex wedding, I can attest to the thoughtfulness and attention to detail that Friesen’s gave to my needs. Not only was there outstanding catering service provided, but also all-out joy for my marriage to anotherwoman. People commented all night on the fabulous cupcakes and I was proud to inform them
that it was Friesen’s that lovingly baked and iced all those beautiful deserts.
Tony and Natasha have expressed excitement in working with SCMN Pride in the future.
